Recommendations needed

I recently got a request from someone to find manga for a 12 year old girl to relate to and I am having a hard time thinking of anything good that would be within that age range.
If anyone could suggest a title that would be greatly appreciated ^_^

Any idea what kinds of things the girl likes?

The first one that comes to mind for me is Gakuen Alice, because it seems to be aimed at middle school girls, and it is pretty popular. At least at the beginning, it has comedy and romance and drama, plus the fantasy element.

Great idea, I've actually never met the girl. My local comic book store owner asked me to create a list because he knows nothing of manga and he was asked by her therapist or something .

Not having met her makes it difficult. It's so hard to recommend books for "12 year olds" and "girls" because maturity level, reading level, and interests vary *so* much. And especially with that age group, you get some who are ready to read things like Twilight, and otehrs for whom the themes are a bit too heavy. So Gakuen Alice seems pretty safe, but then maybe the girl prefers the kinds of stories that you get with Naruto or Bleach, or maybe she's really into supernatural stuff. :/

Another recommendation is Happy Cafe since it ran in the same magazine as Gakuen Alice and is pretty all-ages, that I recall. It's more of a slice-of-life relationship thing than the plotty drama that you get in Gakuen Alice, and there's a lot more comedy. But there isn't the insane shoujo angst of other popular series like Fruits Basket, which maybe she's not quite ready for (and there's no way to tell without knowing her).

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle might be another good choice, and for another CLAMP, there's Cardcaptor Sakura...

I'm trying my best to think of titles that I see all the time at Barnes & Noble that might appeal to younger teens. I can see the colors of the spines on the shelves, but most of the titles are escaping me. -.- I'm especially trying to think of things from the shounen side (thus T:RC), but I personally hate Naruto and Bleach and One Piece, so I don't want to recommend them. :P

i think there are quite a few manga out there where the heroine is at about the same age or younger... try kodocha.. there is some tragedy involved, but the story is enjoyable, and pretty much a classic.

shugo chara is good for 12 year old girls, but it depends on what they prefer.

what about Angelic layer?
