Adding books from books on site

Hello

I'm new here, at least, i decided to manage my rpg book collection here.

There's something I don't understand : I can find some books only by "search in library Thing", but I can't add from there.

I click on add, get en ampty popup telling me to go Add the book from the main menu.
And since I can't find the book on any sources, I have to add it manually from scratch (and most of the time, I'm linked automatically to the book already present.

Am I missing a step ?

thanks

"LibraryThing is not a source." But there are many, many sources. Unfortunately, RPG titles are not well-represented in most academic or public libraries. Maybe someone else has found a library source they can recommend.

When you search LT itself, you find the records added by other users. You can look at their book details to see what library source they used. If they used a library source to add them, that data will also be present in the Overcat source, which you can select when adding books. But if they entered the data manually, there will be no record for you to add. LT doesn't allow you to clone off other users' own books.

To be honest, most of the time you will have to manually enter your RPGs. There's a link at the bottom of the left hand pane on the Add Books page, and be prepared to manually combine with any existing works here.

If you are comfortable using scripts, there are a couple of GreaseMonkey/TamperMonkey scripts available for desktop Firefox or Chrome versions. They function by adding buttons to book details or work details pages which when clicked create a mostly filled in manual addition form. You need to check things like ISBN and author names.

One thing to watch out for is that LT generally considers multiple editions of the same title to be the same work. This is not always the case with RPGs as rules can change significantly between editions, and things like the same scenario will have different stat blocks even though the premise is the same. A good rule of thumb is to consider whether a character created under one edition can be played as is in another edition without needing to be converted.

If you're not sure whether different editions are the same, check the entry on RPGGeek.

I've been slowly adding my RPGs, and much of my collection is obscure indie games or small press publishers. A lot of the time I have to manually add. Again, RPGGeek is a good source of information, but be warned that they list designers (i.e. authors) alphabetically, and the first listed author may not be the primary author listed on the title page. For covers, RPGGeek is your friend!

Feel free to PM me with any questions, or ask about things like series or combining. If you're asking about specific books, please do include a link to your copy.
