Authors with same name

If this isn't the right area to ask this question, please let me know the right place.

I have a book "How to Know the Trees" URL https://www.librarything.com/work/15494102/book/250513450 that was written by a family member Henry Irving, 1850-1924 not by Sir Henry Irving. But when I click on the author's name it takes me to Sir Henry Irving's page/profile. How do I correct it, so that if I find another instance I can take care of it? How is it handled, as there are other authors out there that have the same name, but are more than one person?

Thank you

>1 CJWeldon:

If you go to the Author page and look on the right-hand side, you'll notice an item that says "Improve this author," and below that, an item "Author division." This currently reads (unless someone has gotten to it since I wrote this) "Sir Henry Irving is currently considered a 'single author.' If one or more works are by a distinct, homonymous authors, go ahead and split the author."

Doing this will create a "Sir Henry Irving (1)" and so forth. Works by this author will then have to be assigned to the various Henry Irvings by using the disambiguation mechanisms.

Odds are that someone will do this for you (I'm a little afraid to, because I'm not clear on what to do with all those "Nature Books" -- if you know who wrote which, it would help).

If this all sounds too complicated to try on your own, or if no one here does anything about it, take your request to the "Combiners" group. That's their specialty -- fixing author assignments and getting books in the right places.

I hope that helps.

>2 waltzmn: Thank you! I know for sure on "How to Know the Trees" I wonder about the other nature ones but don't know for sure.

It seems that London from the top of a bus is by the same photographer.

I suspect the Nature Books as well as they are also UK of the same era, but for now I have those separate.

To correct the author attribution on LibraryThing, visit the book's page, click on the incorrect author (Sir Henry Irving), and use the "Is this you?" link to request a correction with an explanation.

>6 EdwardArriaga: There is no need to bother staff. Spliting was what was needed, and it has been done. There are even ways for members to correct author names without involving staff and misusing features. If you hadn't just joined a few days ago, you might know that.

That link is for authors to contact staff in order to request becoming an LT author. It's nothing to do with misattributions.
