I must have read this 20 years ago. The main male character was Beau, he was to poor/low class for the female characters family, they both married other people. Her family lost their money and he got rich. I’m not sure if they were widowed or divorced but when one of his twin daughters got polio she came back to nurse her. They did end up getting married. I think it was based in America, possibly down south.
