Sharing again this gorgeous view from Waterton Lakes National Park (photo mine) because it's just too beautiful not to look at for a month.

I'm Micky, 36 years old, librarian, and generally bookish nerd. I usually have a good mix of reads going on every year with strong doses of romance, sff, historicals, and a dash of non-fiction. This year my goal is to only read books that bring me joy, which means I'm likely to read a bunch of genre fiction. As part of that goal, I'm also striving to re-read more books from my own collection and will be using a D20 to select a shelf and then choose a book from there at least once a month.

I do my best to be chatty on my own thread and in addition to my reading, I'll also discuss highlights of my craft projects (check out my NeedleArts thread if you like more details), board games, what we're watching, and general life goings on often featuring my husband, Mr. Fine, and our two cats, Ash and Smee. Posters and lurkers alike are welcome.

My rating system:

/ = Ran screaming in the other direction (aka did not finish)
* = Suffered through it for reasons I'm still not sure of
** = Had far more flaws than virtues
*** = A read I don't regret but could use some improvement
**** = A good, solid read that I might revisit
***** = Loved it beyond reason and will probably re-read in short order

What happened October 1?

I was up at 7 to have breakfast and get the usual house cleaning out of the way early in the day. I had leadership training at church from 10-3 (with a free lunch in there), which wasn't particularly exciting but I got to hang out in the back with my dad and got a bunch of crochet (and frogging and more crochet) done. So that was nice. Afterwards I went home to pick up Mr. Fine and we went to a 'burb on the west side of the city to pick up a pre-order Mr. Fine had waiting at the board game store there. Then we came home and Mr. Fine made stew with some of the moose meat we brought home from Newfoundland along with sourdough rolls. TV viewing in the evening included DS9 and Bluey.

What happened October 2?

I had the day off as a day in lieu for the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation (September 30) but Mr. Fine did not. So I got up and drove him to the bus station and then returned home. I did a long overdue mopping of the floors as my one adult task for the day. The rest of the day I did only fun things. Played Hogwarts Legacy for a couple hours. Watched The Nanny while having lunch. Then put on The Mirror Has Two Faces (an old favourite for me) while I did cross-stitch. Then I read until it was time to pick up Mr. Fine. Supper was stir fry and we watched a couple episodes of The Nanny before I went to virtual craft circle.

What happened October 3?

Back to the work grind for me and back in the office. The branches were open on Monday but my department was closed (joys of being in a department that only works M-F during business hours) so there was a bit of email to catch up on. Mostly worked on customer suggestions in the morning, had my 1:1 with my manager, and in the afternoon a few of the librarians in my department met with a student from the local library school who wanted to pick our brains for an assignment in her collections management course. Supper was mystery food from the freezer. It ended up being shepherd's pie filling, to which Mr. Fine added hashbrowns. Surprisingly tasty. TV viewing was several episodes of The Rookie.

What happened October 4?

Pretty average in office day. I did selection work, had a few short meetings to prep for a course, brainstorm program options with an upcoming Featured Writer, discuss how to divide up a presentation I'm giving with a co-worker next week, and plot the next social committee thing (treat bags for National Library Worker Day on October 20). Supper was Montreal smoked meat sandwiches with veggies. We watched a couple episodes of Doctor Who (almost caught up!) and a few of Bluey.

What happened October 5?

Back to the sweet WFH life. I had no meetings at all so I spent most of the day reviewing customer suggestions, going through review journals, and checking out vendor lists. In the evening we had our weekly date night. I was craving a burger so we went to Fatburger for dinner and then walked to the nearby Marble Slab to get ice cream for dessert. Afterwards, we wandered through the book store as Mr. Fine wanted to buy a copy of Making It So. Still had time for TV viewing in the evening so we watched some Bluey and the first episode of the new season of Loki.

Yesterday's adventures: WFH Friday! Woot! Started the day by finally tackling putting together draft language for our collections manual about the local author collection (we've had the collection a while, we just hadn't documented criteria outside the submission form) for a couple managers to review. I also had a meeting with the team at our new print vendor to discuss standing orders. I'm so excited because they have a really good process in place that should make managing these SO MUCH smoother. The rest of the day was mostly spent doing selection in OverDrive and a teensy bit for the print collection. In the morning I got a text from the woman who was supposed to lead song service at church on Saturday asking me to cover as she has both strep throat and pink eye. I agreed, so after my work day I went for a walk with Mr. Fine before going to church to practice songs with the pianist. I had soup and open-faced grilled cheese for dinner when I got home. Then Mr. Fine and I played Casting Shadows and afterwards I stitched a bit while Mr. Fine played video games.

Oct 7, 5:58 pm

What's (been) on today's agenda: I was up showered, breakfasted, and at church for 9:30 this morning. Did sound check and another quick review of a few songs with the pianist and then spent some time in the A/V booth making sure lyric slides were set (so much faster to make edits myself then stand over someone's shoulder and ask them to move slides, copy them, etc.). Church was lovely as usual and afterwards I helped my mom disassemble her Thanksgiving display she put at the front (fruits of the harvest type thing with veggies, fruits, a loaf of bread, etc.). Ended up chit-chatting for a while after service and didn't drop off Mr. Fine at the gym until almost 1:30. Spent the afternoon catching up on LT with a brief pause to mix up some pizza dough, which is currently rising in the oven (I love the proofing setting). I'll help Mr. Fine put our pizzas together and then the plan is to go for a walk after dinner. It's been gorgeous here today with a high of 23C so we have to take advantage. Double feature is likely this evening.

What I'm reading: I've been reading The Fragile Threads of Power since Thursday evening and thoroughly enjoying it.

What I'm crafting: Most of the time it's been the tree skirt. I might have another page done in the next couple weeks.

I have been eyeing The Fragile Threads of Power at the store. Just not sure if I should get the signed version or the regular. Is it sort of a continuation of the shades of magic series or is it completely different?

Book 91

Something Wilder - Christina Lauren

Lily Wilder's dream has always been to run a dude ranch. But in the wake of her father's death, she's instead left running treasure hunting tours through the Utah wilderness that draw on her father's fame as a Butch Cassidy treasure hunter. The last thing Lily expects is for her latest tour group to include her long-lost love, Leo Grady. When things go wrong on the tour, Lily and Leo will end up tracking down clues left by Lily's father to try and track down Butch Cassidy's loot. But as they travel through the canyons of Utah, there may be more for them to discover than just treasure.

I'm very fond of Christina Lauren's romances as they're always a good time. This one is particularly fun as there's a heavy dose of adventure mixed in with the romance. There's an obvious debt owed to stories like Romancing the Stone (which they acknowledge in their acknowledgements) and the book holds up in comparison. Lily and Leo's romance is a slow simmer through most of the book, with the treasure hunt taking the front seat, but there's plenty to please those who are in it for the kissing (and other things). Recommended for contemporary romance fans who want to mix it up a bit.

Rating: ****

>18 figsfromthistle: It's set in the same universe as the Shades of Magic (about 6 years after the events of A Conjuring of Light). Familiar characters have shown up but I believe the main character who is the primary focus (and hasn't really shown up yet in the chapters I've read so far) is new. So sort of a continuation?

Book 92

When a Scot Ties the Knot - Tessa Dare

At the age of sixteen, painfully shy Maddie Gracechurch, to avoid a London season, lied to her family and invented a Scottish fiance she purportedly met on a trip to Brighton. Thus began years of sending letters to the fictitious Captain Logan Mackenzie serving in the wars against Napoleon until finally Maddie made the decision to kill off her imaginary fiance. So it is with a great deal of surprise when a living, breathing, Captain Logan Mackenzie arrives in her drawing room several years later with the avowed intent of marrying her. Maddie isn't certain she wants the marriage of convenience that Logan is offering her but the more time she spends with him the more she thinks there may be more between them.

Tessa Dare is at the top of my list of favourite historical romance authors. This novel is from the mid-2010s and while there's the really fun central concept and the occasional dash of humour and swoon, it's not quite as sparkling as her later work. Maddie and Logan's romance is a bit uneven but I did adore the background Dare creates for Maddie as a scientific illustrator. It's a solid historical romance but not where I'd recommend starting if you're exploring Tessa Dare's works for the first time.

Rating: ***1/2

What's on the agenda: Need to get up and at it shortly as it's a full day today. We'll have breakfast first and then I'll help Mr. Fine prep the turkey to go in the oven for 9ish. Once the bird is in the oven I'll tackle the usual Sunday cleaning, plus helping set up our extra table as our kitchen table cannot seat the 13 people we'll have this year. While the forecasted high of 24°C will make it tricky keeping the house a tolerable temperature, it does mean some people can sit on the deck, if they like. I've told my family to arrive for 1 and we'll aim for dinner at 2. H is joining us this year (the first time since we've got married, I think) but she will be leaving early as she has a pet-sitting gig today. This will be her second of three Thanksgiving meals (her mom's family is having two this year). The rest of my family is likely to be here until 5 or 6 at least knowing them, although my Dad is on call this weekend so we'll cross our fingers nothing breaks at his work. We'll see what clean up is still outstanding after everyone leaves and then likely collapse in front of the TV for the evening.

What I'm reading: Didn't crack a book yesterday and it's not super likely today either.

What I'm crafting: Progress continues on the tree skirt.

What we're watching: I didn't have energy for a double feature last night so we watched Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation followed by a couple episodes of The Nanny and one of Bluey.

What's on the agenda: It's Thanksgiving Monday with minimal plans. Mr. Fine is still snoozing and I'm trapped under cat so lazing in bed is likely for a while. Eventually there will be breakfast. The only major adulting tasks on the docket for me today is washing out one of the litterboxes, bill stuff, and I should clean out my planters and flower beds (that last may or may not happen as my back is a bit sore today). Mr. Fine will probably be making soup out of the turkey carcass for part of the day. Otherwise, we're free to do whatever. It is once again supposed to be very warm so a walk is likely. Maybe a board game as well. Crafting will happen at some point. Dinner tonight will be hot turkey sandwiches and I'll be having leftover stuffing and Harvard beets on the side with mine.

What I'm reading: I did get in a few chapters of The Fragile Threads of Power before bed last night. Into the second section and some familiar faces have arrived (yay!).

What we're playing: Played both Connect 4 and Uno with the niblings after dinner yesterday.

What I'm crafting: Had the infinity scarf out yesterday as it's easier to pick up and put down during a gathering. Nearly finished the fourth row only to discover something had gone wrong somewhere so I frogged it back to the first row (sob).

What we're watching: A couple episodes of DS9 and Jodie's last episode of Doctor Who. All set for the anniversary specials next month now.

Oct 11, 2:54 pm

Yesterday's adventures: Mr. Fine's on early shift this week and I was in the office so full early morning. Work was a lot of post-long weekend catch-up plus I had tech issues that required IT intervention so that a ate up a chunk of the day. Supper was chicken and broccoli pasta with alfredo sauce. I had my monthly massage in the evening.

What's (been) on the agenda: In the office again today. First thing on the to do list was pulling material for the hands-on section of the workshop on weeding I'm co-leading tomorrow. Customer suggestions, updating Lucky Day content, going through review journals, and a meeting of all the librarians in my department are other major tasks today. It's date night this evening and Mr. Fine has opted for a chai café that also serves a few Indian entrees. It's across the street from the library so we'll pop in there either before or after to pick up holds. Might have time for an episode of something when we get home before bedtime.

What I'm reading: I'm nearly halfway through The Fragile Threads of Power. The pages are on the thin side so it doesn't feel it physically but the book is a 600+ page chunkster.

What I'm crafting: Monday evening I tackled the crochet infinity scarf after some substantial frogging, which is going OK so far on this go around. Last night I didn't pick up a project.

What we're watching: Monday night I opted to do a complete rewatch of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel before watching the final season (which I still haven't seen), so we watched the first couple episodes of season one, followed by one episode of The Nanny, and a few of Bluey. The batch of Bluey episodes included Onesies, which the internet (and friends) had warned me would make me cry. That was insufficient emotional preparation as I full on sobbed. I know I've said it before but even if there are no pre-schoolers in your life, you should watch Bluey.

Last night we got in a two-parter of The Rookie before I left for my massage.

>54 bell7: Me too! If we weren't big Star Wars and Marvel nerds in our house, Who being on Disney+ would be a push for keeping the service.

57MickyFine
Oct 12, 5:06 pm

What's (been) on the agenda: My last in office day for the week and it's been a full one. This morning I co-led a 3-hour workshop on weeding, so with prep and takedown that was the first half of my day. This afternoon I had the monthly meeting for one of the teams I'm on. Even though only three of us made it, it was nearly the scheduled 90 minutes. So this introvert is pretty brain dead now. I'm on my coffee break and then I just have 40 minutes of attempting productivity. After work, I'll meet Mr. Fine at Costco. He has a medical appointment so in theory by the time I get there, he'll have finished shopping, then we just have to do the non-Costco grocery shopping. Supper tonight is supposed to be fish and rice but odds are high Mr. Fine will swap it for something else (it will likely be more cooking than he feels like doing after grocery shopping).

What I'm reading: Still Fragile Threads of Power. Reading progress is slow because I'm savouring it and should not be taken as a sign as a lack of enjoyment.

What I'm crafting: Didn't pick up anything last night.

What we're watching: I've opted to start The X-Files. This will be my third time watching the whole thing through (although I haven't watched all the reboot episodes). Mr. Fine has seen some episodes but has never watched it all before. We watched the pilot last night and he's enjoying it so far. We're having a grand time with all the 90s technology already.

Sympathies on the introvert brain exhaustion! Whenever I have to present on a webinar it takes me like an hour to recover, lol. I am impressed you can do Costco and non-Costco shopping in one day -- I'm always wiped by the end of the Costco trip 😂

I haven't seen that image in the topper. I miss a lot, but that's beautiful!

>58 curioussquared: Thanks for the introvert empathy! Living at home, that's always how my mom tackled grocery shopping. It doesn't hurt that he Costco and the regular grocery store we go to are maybe half a block apart.

>59 The_Hibernator: Thanks, Rachel!

Yesterday's adventures: It was a WFH Friday, yay! I spent the work day largely focused on Overdrive selection and customer suggestions although I also did some calendar management and spent a bit of time with an issue of LJ. I finished work early to go for a medical appointment and got in a healthy dose of reading time while sitting in waiting areas. Afterwards, I swung by the local yarn store to pick up a couple crochet hooks before heading home. While Mr. Fine worked on supper, I downloaded the photos from our anniversary photo shoot and reviewed some union stuff. Supper was beef stew. We watched a bit of TV and then started assembling Mr. Fine's Lego Viking village. Then I stayed up a bit late to finish a book.

What's on today's agenda: Getting up shortly to shower, have breakfast, and get ready for church. After church I'll drop off Mr. Fine at the gym and then probably craft a bit. I also need to make cornmeal muffins before we head to M&A's for our monthly game night (they're making chili). And that's pretty much all that's likely happen around here.

What I'm reading: Not sure I'll get book time today but if I do I'll be starting Isn't It Bromantic?

What I'm crafting: Nada.

What we're watching: A couple episodes of The Rookie and the last few unwatched episodes of Bluey we had left.

What's on the agenda: It's a full Sunday ahead. We may or may not be going out for breakfast (Mr. Fine is deciding on that front) but afterwards we're heading across town to pick up a board game he pre-ordered (Everdell Mistwood) around when the store opens at 10:30. This afternoon we're going to the movie theatre to watch the Taylor Swift Eras concert recording. I'm pretty excited for it (Mr. Fine less so). Afterwards, we need to pop into the mall for a couple things. I think supper is pasta tonight. Chill evening at home after all the running around.

What I'm reading: As predicted, I didn't crack a book yesterday so I'll be starting Isn't It Bromantic? today.

What I'm crafting: Did a bit of crocheting in the afternoon yesterday.

What we're playing: We played Casting Shadows at game night and I had a rare win.

Sounds like a fun day! Hope you continue to enjoy the Bromance books. I'm all caught up but would eagerly read more if she wrote them.

I hope the Taylor Swift concert movie was good! I want to go but I'm not sure I'll have the time.

>63 curioussquared: I've got my hold on the last book paused so that I'll (hopefully) get it around the holidays but then I will likewise be caught up. I'm eager to read whatever Adams does next as I really enjoy her style.

>64 Familyhistorian: Thanks, Meg!

>65 norabelle414: I had a great time. Mr. Fine is not a big TSwift fan (he doesn't hate her, just doesn't listen to her other than when I play her stuff) and he thought it was a good show too. If I can find the time, it's a fun few hours.

What's (been) on the agenda: It's a WFH Monday. Dropped off Mr. Fine at the bus, came home for a shower, and then dived into work. Major tasks include customer suggestions, going through review journals, and addressing any questions that come up from one of my co-workers who returned from leave today. Right after work I'll be heading to Canadian Tire for the seasonal tire swap out so I'll get some reading time while I wait for that. Mr. Fine's making some kind of pasta for dinner. Depending on how long the tire change takes, I may or may not go to virtual craft circle this evening.

What I'm reading: Made it a couple chapters into Isn't It Bromantic? last night.

What I'm crafting: Back to crocheting and frogging and crocheting on the infinity scarf.

What we're watching: A couple episodes of DS9, one of The Rookie, and a couple of The Nanny.

What happened today: I was in the office today and Mr. Fine is on his later shift so we commuted together this morning. It was handy as I had extra stuff to haul in and Mr. Fine was able to help. Spent the first bit of the day assembling gift bags for the staff in our department on behalf of the social committee. It's National Library Worker Day on Friday (in Canada) so we're celebrating with treats. Afterwards I pulled some expired content from a couple online resources, went through two issues of Booklist, and had a meeting with my manager. Dinner tonight was butter chicken and we had a quiet evening in front of the TV.

What I'm reading: Did a reread of Nimona today. Pre-bedtime reading this evening will be Well Traveled.

What I'm crafting: I've been in a crochet mood lately so working on my scarf.

What we're watching: Last night we got in one episode of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and a couple of The Nanny.

What's (been) on the agenda: Another in office day today. I have a few meetings including a job shadow with a practicum student, a discussion with a few other staff members to review our in-house process for standing orders, and a meeting with my coaching trio. Between that I'm working on staff reported collection gaps, pulling outdated material from Overdrive, and some ordering. After work, we'll swing by the local library for holds and then go pick up shawarma/donair for dinner. Date night in after all the peopling today.

What I'm reading: Started Well Traveled on the bus this morning (didn't feel like reading last night and played in my colour by number app instead).

What I'm crafting: About halfway through row 4 of the infinity scarf and I think it's going to stick this time. Yay!

What we're watching: A few episodes of The Rookie.
