A young lawyer is asked to settle the estate of a rich politician and lawyer while he is still alive.
But business matters become secondary as he delves deeper into the client's past.
Martin Suter has a wonderfully clear writing style.

Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: A Friend

Liz Montario's expert opinion leads to the release of a suspect in London. Since everyone is convinced of his guilt, she receives death threats. So it is fitting that the help of her institute is requested in Germany.
Georg Stadler has to deal with a brutal series of murders in which proverbs play a role.
Again exciting and variedly written.

134. Das Schlangenhaupt / Darwin's Blade by Dan Simmons

German title translated: The serpent's head
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Call from the bookshelf
Medium: ebook
First published: 2000

Darwin Minor is an insurance adjuster. When an attempt is made on his life, the reason is initially unclear.
But then it turns out that he has got in the way of a group of insurance fraudsters who will stop at nothing. His experience as a sniper in Vietnam comes in handy.
The exciting story is one side, but at the same time some bizarre accidents are described that are based on facts.
I love Simmon's writing style, though I love the Hyperion Cantos and Ilium-Olympos series even more.

The weekend started very well.
Yesterday the deli had fresh tuna, so we had a very tasty lunch:

Tuna tartare, tuna steak wrapped in sesame seeds, rice, tuna sashimi flamed.

Today we have 2 events, first we are going to an open reading circle - the whole city is called to read the same book - Der rote Swimmingpool - I am curious about the opinions of the others.
Tonight we are having a street party and barbecue.
It's a small street, there will be just over 30 of us - the weather is supposed to stay nice.

The weekend was very nice, at the reading circle there was only one other guest apart from us and the bookseller, that was a bit disappointing. But there were some new aspects of the book and it was good.
The street party was great, we were 31 people with wonderful weather and wonderful conversations.
Then yesterday we had a quiet tidy up and otherwise a quiet reading Sunday.

English Title: The Healer
German title translated: The Healer
Genre: Dystopia
Reading Reason: Author
Medium: ebook

I loved the Henri Koskinen books. This one is not funny.
A thriller in the middle of the climate catastrophe, a killer who brutally kills those supposedly responsible.
A journalist hot on his heels who disappears. As the police are totally overloaded, her husband sets out to find her. In the process, he finds out more about his wife than he would like.
Dark and suspenseful.

German title translated: Stardance
Genre: Science Fiction
Reading Reason: Call from the bookshelf
Medium: Paper book
First published: 1977

I love this book, it is a re-re-read.
Charlie is a gifted dancer with a bullet in his hip who now accompanies performances as a cameraman. Shara is a gifted dancer with a beautiful body that is not suited to ballet.
They find a way to dance anyway - in space. And when aliens appear, their skills as a translator are needed. Shara manages to repel the dancing creatures, but she has too little oxygen to return.
Charlie sets up a dance company in space and becomes very successful, also as a dancer.
Then the strangers come back.
A beautiful book about love and hope, I am not a sentimental person, but here I had some water in my eyes.

138. Holly / Holly by Stephen King

German title translated: Holly (finally a german title that fits!)
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Author
Medium: Paper book
First published: 2023

Holly Gibney is looking for a young woman who has disappeared, and in the process she gets on the trail of a terrible series of murders.
She has to work alone for the most part, as her colleagues are busy with private matters or ill. But they help her as much as they can. The enemy is frightening, a frail old couple - a contradiction? NO
There is hardly any supernatural this time, but King manages to create a horror atmosphere, he is a great storyteller who swallows up the reader.
There have been some not so good books from him lately, this is one of the good ones.

Thank you very much, we had that, Ella.
It's not the only event, others were better attended. On 6 October there is the big closing event with the author herself.
In 2019, we had the Baden-Württemberg Literature Days in the city with many different events and authors. This gave rise to the idea of choosing a book every year and reading it together. We love it.

On Saturday we also had a great time, we went to a Boogie Woogie concert with Jörg Hegemann (piano), Paul G. Ulrich (bass) and Jan Freund (drums).

Although some are very short, they are very profound and thought-provoking.
At the end of each story there is a photo of a small miniature with a connection to it, sometimes a whole diorama.
Looking at the pictures often gives the reader clues to better understand the twist, and here too the author's great imagination comes to the fore.
Again the Early Reviewers program helped me get a good book.

NYC 1897: Children find body parts, the search for the rest of the dead and the murderer begins.

The book describes more a newspaper war than the murder story, but this is also very interesting.
Among other things, the reader learns the origin of the term Yellow Press.
The book is based on facts, the effects of this story are still relevant today - what is truth, what is manipulation?

An appeal to people to respect other opinions and people.
Fanaticism already starts in supposed trivialities, no one is immune to it.
A quote from Yehuda Amichai that touched me very much:
In the place where we are right, flowers will never grow in the spring.
The place where we are right is trampled and hard as a yard.

The little book is very intense and encourages one to think about one's own attitude.
It touched me very much, especially in the current situation.

158. Die Vorhersage / The Measure by Nikki Erlick

German title translated: The Prediction
Genre: Science Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the Library
Medium: ebook
First published: 2022

When every adult human being on earth receives a box with a thread in it that defines the length of their life, the world is thrown into chaos.
Humanity splits into long threads and short threads, relationships are ended, attacks are committed, there is discrimination. But also friendship and love despite everything.
Machine of Death has a similar theme, but in the short stories there it is predicted how one dies, not when.
Interesting and exciting and thought-provoking - how would I react to such a situation?
