Happy Birthday to LibraryThing! It's August 29th, and LibraryThing is turning 18!

We're kicking off the celebration with a sale on everything in the LibraryThing Store through the month of September, and we're hosting a special Birthday Treasure Hunt!

Treasure Hunt.The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

You have two weeks—until Tuesday September 12th at 11:59pm EST—to find all the birthday candles hidden around the site and add them to your collection.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two birthday candles, and anyone who finds all 12 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker.

I got 10 out of 12 with my first pass but it doesn't actually show I got the 10 so I'm going to try at a later date and see if it fixes itself.

I think #8 is causing some weirdness. I first looked at the personal page that would be for someone else's candle which seemed to give me a ghost candle (i.e., the banner acknowledged I had a candle but the hunt page did not give me credit for that candle). Visiting my own personal page for #8 gave me credit for the candle on the hunt page. And then the ghost candle stuck around so that the banner said I'd found 13 out of 12 candles when I finished finding them all.

for 3 and 7 check out in the banner/menu at the top, More, and Zeitgeist. there is lots of interesting things in there!

I found 7 to be the hardest. Well, the most frustrating. I knew immediately what it was about but kept focussing on finding an LT page about the items and not for the people who earned them!

The counts for candles should now be correct.

Arrrgh! I got #9, but how?!? I clicked on everything related to tagging and tag that I could, but don't recall a banner showing anywhere. Have headache now. Whimper.

From 'Home', click 'Charts & graphs' then either on the left menu click ,Books' 'Measurements', or click 'see more' on the 'How tall is your bookstack' graph. Then wait 5-10 seconds!

I only get the banner on about half the pages, been that way for every hunt I've done. I have to rely on refreshing the main hunt page to make sure I get the right answer. Makes it difficult when the tally doesn't update correctly like this afternoon.

I've never done this kind of thing before and didn't think I could do it! I got them all, with a little help on #12. I'm not that computer literate. :) But, I learned a lot in the process, which I know is half the reason for these kind of scavenger hunts. Wish I had a ton of time to explore LibraryThing daily! For #8 I assumed I would go to Charts & Graphs, but I cannot find any category there that would fit the answer. I thought one of the Books options should be the best fit, but none of Cataloging, Reading Dates, Ratings/Reviews, Book Covers, Genres, Dewey Decimal, Tag Cloud, Tag Mirror, Site vs Member, Controversial Books, Collections, Pages give me the physical attributes. I thought the last one might, but it turned out that didn’t refer to quantities. So where else do I go?

Am I the only he only one who doesn't get #1? It's the only one I have left.

From any LT page search for 'tagging'. On the search results page use the left menu to select 'Tags'. Now click on the tag 'tagging'. The second highest work tagged with the tag 'tagging' is the one you want.

This hunt's easier than the last one I tried. In fact, I found there was a hunt happening by getting told I'd found one of the candles ;-)

The answer is obvious. but where to find the candle is not.

Also, what happened to the banner across top of page that used to let us know that a hunt was on? I only found out by scrolling my home-page - which I don't do regularly. I would have been very sad to have missed it - and to have missed earning one of those "stinking" badges referred to in #7

Never saw a banner announcing the hunt. Found out by loading a page I look at every night while having a cup of coffee. Found a few others as I as doing my get ready for work routine. Have found all of them now, and as a few others have commented, this was probably the easiest one to complete. Tho number one was a bit of a PITA scrolling thru all the "Dummies" books until the right one appeared.

Thank you for everyone who offered hints. This is the first hunt I have taken part in, and with assistance I got all 12 (I found 6 I think on my own). I learned a little bit about the site on the way.

Happy Birthday LT! Thank you for the interesting hunt! It seemed more random than the other ones. There were a couple I got without knowing how and others I could not get even following the hints. The most difficult one for me was #12. It was because I kept only replacing a few of the digits with the number 1 instead all of the digits Finally I got all of them and even guessed the ones I got but didn't know why.

#9 is a work. One of its prominent subjects is "tagging".

Just think what you would have to do to get a gold or silver award. For 12 you have to know that the URL for every book on LT has a number at the end, which corresponds to what book it was when it was added. So if you are looking for the FIRST book, what number would you add? Just substitute that number for any number you find in a URL for any book. Good luck!!

In this case you need to be on the work level page to get the candle.

I didn't get a banner either. It's possibly because, I've been told, that a couple of hunts ago I dismissed the banner once I'd got all my penguins (or whichever they were at the time). I haven't seen a banner since, but someone usually posts on the Treasure Hunts group when there's a new hunt.

I have seen several people saying they did not get a banner this time. I have not seen one person saying that they did get a banner. I certainly didn't.

I think for most LT users it is a good thing to be able to dismiss the banner for good.
But it would be nice to be able to get it back if wanted.

I got a banner at some point last week -- after I had about half of the clues solved. It may be tied to what pages you open - I was somewhere around my profile page or my home page when it finally showed up (an the profile page is one I rarely if ever open unless I am sending it to someone)...

Regarding the banner: the developers are aware of the spotty nature of the banner's appearance, and the fact that dismissing it once seems to dismiss it forever, despite the member's wishes/preferences. The issue is on the list of things to be looked at, although I have no timeline to give on a resolution.

Average, or median? The odds of the arithmetic mean being exactly three are... approximately nil, but it's perfectly possible that the median is in fact 3.0. And I suspect the difference between mean and median is substantial in this case.

It doesn't really matter, but I'd be interested.

It would also teach us how much the LT staff knows about statistics. :-)

I did not have a banner for this Treasure Hunt. Fortunately I still found the hunt.

For me the banner showed up after I had found a few candles. I have dismissed several hunt banners over the years.

It's a mystery!

I never got the banner. But I check this group at least once a week and saw the thread about it.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but the new announcement regarding the Halloween Treasure Hunt reminded me: I never received any badge for the 2023 Birthday Treasure Hunt. I thought anyone who found at least two of the hidden items? Now, we have a new Treasure Hunt, also promising badges if you find at least two, but I still haven't received the badge for the previous Treasure Hunt. Am I not understanding something?
