I bought my present home from a certain Mr Jaggard and - being a bookseller - on first meeting him I asked him whether he had perhaps inherited any old manuscripts that had come down the family line...

He congratulated me on being the first person in his life immediately to recognise the significance of his surname and said sadly that he hadn't.

>4 English-bookseller: Marvelous. I can just imagine him replying, "Since you mention it, we do have a few dozen unsold old Shakespeare books out in the garage".

Damn, shame it's a limited. I'd actually like a collected Shakespeare from FS in a standard edition.

They'll take note. It will be a standard 'fine' edition some day. As a business, when they publish original works, whether art or otherwise, it makes too much sense for them to release a standard edition.

Going back to my Mr Jaggard, The Folio Society may have missed a trick by not tracking him down and arranging for him to sign each of the new Limited Editions.

After all, I assume there are no First Folios of whatever edition or reprints thereof which have been signed ... by a descendant of the original printer.

Here's hoping.

By the way, does anyone know of a complete Shakespeare that has a sewn binding rather than glued?

>10 adriano77: is it a one-volume edition that you are looking for?

Ideally, though I suppose 2-3 would be fine as well.

I believe Everyman has done Shakespeare in six volumes but so far most places don't carry all in stock (I'd want one order).

Seven volumes, plus an eighth for the poems. Looks a good prospect if you're happy with the text and can find a set. There are plenty of older sewn editions to choose from of course, single volume and otherwise: I happily paid the very low asking price for a 1949 Oxford Standard Authors one half bound in good blue leather and seeming hardly to have been opened (but fondly inscribed to a lady).

>12 adriano77: As Terebinth says the complete Everyman is eight volumes. There is a substantial introduction to each volume by Tony Tanner (this must be close to 1000 pages in total across the volumes).

>7 adriano77: They did at least two different runs in six volume editions. There’s plenty to be had on the secondary market. They aren’t terribly expensive either.

>10 adriano77: I'll throw my endorsement out for the Everyman's Library series as well. They were my first read through of Shakespeare and I found the introductions by Tony Tanner as well as the footnotes (not those awful endnotes!) added to my enjoyment.

>10 adriano77: It should also be noted that the Heritage Press 3 volume set gets universally good reviews but I don't own it so I can't speak to that.

It should ALSO be noted that for the nearly the same price FS is selling this for you can get letterpress individual plays (Limited Editions Club) or the letterpress collected works (Nonesuch Press (at auction)).

Thanks for the input all. Guess I'll make a concerted effort on the EL copies.
