The world-building in this book is amazing. The author's ability to write lush, vivid descriptions adds excellent flavor to his imaginative setting. Every story is a journey, even if the characters never leave home. In this case, the journey is physical as well as emotional. Aeda, a Thief of uncertain origins, is tasked with an important bit of larceny involving Gieral, a Historian. She (and we) quickly learn that the job title does not imply some sedentary scholar who is more at home surrounded by books than out in the world, having adventures. There are "books" in this world, but there are also Rune Trees, which record history without bias or favor. A most fascinating concept, crafted compellingly.

The only negative I encountered (and this goes more toward my preferences than the author's ability) was that I felt the character-building could have been stronger. And even that was somewhat remedied toward the end of the book, as we see Aeda begin to assert herself and find her strength.

I look forward to the next volume of this series. ( )

A surprising good read, a book that I never thought I would love as well as like. I loved that the Historian taught the thief a good lesson when she stole the Historian's pouches of essence and that she could outrun her because she thought that she knew the city better. Book one had me rapidly reading and I forgot that this was a trilogy. ( )
