Not all the stories in this book include a detective, a femme fatale, or a dead body. In fact, a significant number of the writers chose to avoid these genre staples. And yet the stories - each taking place in a different part of the city - sketch a dark imagined map of the city, where religious mystery dwells alongside the quotidian, claustrophobic hubbub of the Central Bus Station... The stories included in West Jerusalem Noir could not have taken place anywhere else. They reflect national, religious, and socioeconomic tensions inherent to the city and sketch an image of a concrete, contemporary, and complicated Jerusalem.' It is being published simultaneously with East Jerusalem Noir.
Jerusalem is one of the world’s most complex locales. Whereas the East Jerusalem Noir anthology collection is written from the perspective of Palestinian writers, West Jerusalem Noir is written from the perspective of Israeli writers.
The editor, Maayan Eitan, says it best in her Introduction. “ This anthology offers a fictional tour of Jerusalem, this time through the lens of the noir genre. Not all the stories in this book include a detective, a femme fatale, or a dead body.” “And yet the stories - each taking place in a different part of the city - sketch a dark imagined map of the city, where religious mystery dwells alongside the quotidian (ordinary, commonplace), claustrophobic hubbub of the Central Bus Station.”
I also like Ms. Eitan’s references to the travel writings of Herman Melville and Robert Louis Stevenson.
West Jerusalem Noir is an ARC (Advance Reading Copy) from Akashic Books.
I love this series. From Paris to Wall Street to Palm Springs to Baghdad to Columbus, Ohio, I have traveled vicariously throughout the world with these books.
I like the organization of this series. There is a dark-toned cover. A map (I love the map) pinpoints the various locations where the stories take place. A very complete Table of Contents. An Introduction which sets the tone and background of the stories to come. An About the Contributors gives the reader a short bio of the participating authors.
West Jerusalem Noir is edited by Maayan Eitan. Her Introduction is translated by Yardenne Greenspan.
The Noir anthology includes stories by:
A Great Bunch of Guys by Yiftach Ashkenazi
You Can’t See the Occupation From Here by Ilana Berstein
Dos Is Nisht Khazir by Emanuel Yitzchak Levi and Guli Dolev-Hashiloni
Murder at Sam Spiegel by Liat Elkayam
Chrysanthemums by Asaf Schurr
Top of the Stairs by Yardenne Greenspan
In the City of the Dead by Ilai Rowner
Eclipse by Zohar Elmakias
Arson by Ilan Rubin Fields
Vagina by Nano Shabtai
Seven Ways to Make Jewish Stuffed Fish by Yaara Shehori
When Slumber Fell on Me by Tafat Hacohen-Bick
Why Did You Cross the Line? by Nadav Lapid
Levy by Tehila Hakimi
Just One Thing by Oded Wolkstein
I would like to thank all the authors who, with their stories and references, led me to seek out cultural, historical and geographic information about Jerusalem (and Israel).
West Jerusalem Noir has been an excellent reading experience and learning experience as well.
