I grew up in the 1950s, and my father, "Mac," filled our lives with humor, a love of reading, and the gift of adventure. The first ten years of my life seemed magical. He was my Yoda-dependable, witty, and wise. Then abruptly, Yoda was sidelined when Darth Vader became my stepfather. But Mac never quit being my father ... a mentor, teacher, and role model. Years later, I opened a time capsule that contained letters he wrote during WWII, commendations, news articles, and photos. I was stunned. Mac had been among a small group of young pilots trained to fly a new bomber-the B-24 Liberator with the 307th BG, and then the B-29 Superfortress with the 39th BG. Shot down on his first combat mission in Guadalcanal, he and his surviving crew spent three weeks navigating through enemy-infested islands. His service to his country spanned three wars. Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings is a compelling tale about a remarkable man. It grips the reader with his strength of character and fascinating career. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans, history buffs, military devotees, and students of human nature will be inspired by this account told by an adoring daughter. Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings, a biography of an extraordinary man, by Sherry Hobbs.… (more)

I also grew up in the 1950s and my father was also known to his many friends and working colleagues as Mac. I am also in the Pacific but in the other hemisphere. This book is written in two parts. Sherry has provided an excellent biography of her father’s WWII experiences in Part 1 including the historical overview of the events taking place in the Pacific Theatre of War providing the reader with context as it related to MAC. Historical students please note. However in Part 2, she has really excelled in describing the times in which she grew up, completely different but not dissimilar to those in which I grew up half a world away in a country very kindly referred to by MAC on Page 168 (in Part 1). I was so able to relate to the whole story as it unfolded throughout, even the almost forgotten Korean police incident and the disastrous Vietnam era. The whole biography has been carefully woven together in a narrative that flows quite naturally. Congratulations to the author and I commend everyone who reads this to post a review. I received this book from LibraryThing for an honest review and I award it 5 stars. ( )
