As in any collection of stories, some are better than others. The title story differs from the later play (made into a film in 1957), but is very effective. 'The Red Signal' is also fine. My favorite is 'Where There's a Will,' in which a carefully constructed death/murder goes very much awry for the plotter. Hercule Poirot makes an appearance in the final story of the collection, 'The Second Gong,' and displays his usual brilliance. Leonard Vole is charged with murder. Mr. Mayherne is his lawyer. Mr. Vole met a lonely old lady at a party and learns that she is rich. Then he is asked to look over business affairs. Come to find out he is her sole principal beneficiary. Mr. Vole claims that he knew nothing about the money. He looks suspicious when she is murdered. No library descriptions found. |
