An A to Z of planes past and present, this book has stunning cut-paper art and a cute-as-a-button guide named Alis. Named for Dr. Alis B. Kennedy, likely one of the first Indigenous women to obtain a commercial pilot licence with land and sea ratings in Canada, Alis will take you on an aviation tour from the Avro Arrow to the Zeppelin and everything in between. Meticulously researched and uniquely crafted, this is a one-of-a-kind book that will delight aviation fans big and little.… (more)

What a fun book! I want to be Dr. Alis Kennedy and bet the author and illustrator of this book do too. You will learn about her at the back of the book with her amazing life story of adventure and service. Although she has earned many honors, she says the one which means the most is the eagle feather, the highest award to indigenous people.

Now on to the story itself. Alis and her trusty dog companion fly and explore a colorful array of 25 planes and one parachute , each representing a letter in the alphabet. A glossary provides short descriptions of each of these. The illustrations and writing are bold and appealing. Kids will quickly learn a lot about aviation history.

An unusual, and clever alphabet book. A perfect companion to anyone who also enjoyed Lois Lenski’s The Little Airplane and a reminder that the sky beckons both girls and boys.

My kids and I have enjoyed reading this book together several times already! It's a great introduction to different kinds of (mostly Canadian) aircraft-- I wasn't familiar with many of the specific airplane models before. It includes a few 'generic' categories like hot air balloon, ultralight, and zeppelin as well.

This book works on multiple levels, depending on the age and attention span of the children experiencing it. The cut-paper illustrations are very well done! Lovely texture and dimension-- and impressive specificity in details-- throughout. To read as a rhyming alphabet book doesn't take a large time commitment, and is enjoyable for all ages. For those who would like to know more, the biography of Alis is very interesting, and the individual blurbs about each aircraft are also engaging and informative.

Fascinating historical anecdotes reward those who wish to read, including the fact that the Queen of the Yukon was the sister plane to The Spirit of St. Louis. I also appreciated the nod to "Fly Away Home" and similar true stories by featuring an ultralight leading geese on their migration.

Lovely work!

What an interesting, well-done picture book! There are 26 pictures of various airplanes and other flying machines that correspond to each alphabet letter. The cut-paper art is colorful and the layouts are outstanding. A great bonus is the glossary at the end (nice for comparing planes) and the biographical page about the inspiration for the book, pilot Alis Kennedy. She is truly a great role model for young people. I think this would be a welcome addition to an elementary classroom library and would attract interest from both boys and girls. Thank you - a wonderful book from Early Reviewers. ( )

This ABC book covering types of airplanes, from the Arrow to the Zeppelin will appeal to fans of aviation and young children who love planes. The cut-paper illustrations are colorful and eye-catching, and the back matter provides more details about each plane that is featured. ( )
