While the story itself was fine and centered around the character that (so far) I like the best in the series, it didn't really add anything to the rest of the series and doesn't need to be read for additional detail/clarification. The rating: 2.75 A bit short, but good. Nice prequel to [b:The Blood Gospel|15818164|The Blood Gospel (The Order of the Sanguines, #1)|James Rollins|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1357605320s/15818164.jpg|21545770], although I read that first. As 50% if the book was the start of Blood Gospel, I feel they should not sell these short novellas, but rather give them away as a teaser, as some do. Then again, I used a bargain code to buy this book, so I did not pay the asked for price. A new story and characters to fall in love with at the end...but before... The story is a stand alone short story well worth every little penny! Fresh life has been breathed into James with his classic ability to scare the crap out of you with whispered ancient mysteries spat forth & swallowed up again by the desert. This collaborative with Rebecca Cantell who adds a gentle curve to his raw scientific edge SIGMA's tale has taken him with the last couple of tales. It promises to be the genius stand alone style but is the first in the series, The Sanguine Series! So excited for himself and Rebecca to bury me in the mystery of the upcoming book, due January 2013. I would have preferred to read this story first, followed by the novel; however, I found out about this short story prequel to The Blood Gospel by James Rolins and Rebecca Cantrell only after I had received an advance review copy of the full novel, hence I read them in reverse order. The short story is interesting and serves to introduce a few of the characters we meet in the novel, but feels as if it's not a complete story, the ending feels as if the resolution of the problem is far from complete. The lead-in to the novel is well done; this could have been the first chapter of the novel. no reviews | add a review

Nevertheless, these short stories are designed to whet your appetite for the next in the series (in this case, the first). It succeeds here. ( )
